Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS - WARDA MEYER

RESIDENTS of Lwandle near Somerset West are now able to keep up to date on city developments after the City of Cape Town installed an electronic SMS signboard at the local municipal offices.

The city says the SMS board will be used to keep the community informed about city initiatives and meetings.

Hilda Oosthuizen, head of the city’s LED programme and project implementation, said the plan was to place the signs at 12 city-managed business facilities, to test how well they worked as communcations tools.

Lwandle councillor Xolani Sotashe said: “Gone are the days of having to use a loudhailer to infor m our people about community meetings and events. Now I can merely SMS a message to the central control room and it is displayed on the screen.”

Lwandle’s signboard will soon be followed by others in places like Bloekombos, West Bank, Happy Valley and Mitchells Plain.
