Ir­ish MPs to cut salaries

DUBLIN: Ir­ish MPs have voted to cut the salaries of their lead­ers and the nation’s min­i­mum wage in the lat­est stage of a new deficit-slash­ing pro­gramme.

An emer­gency cost-cut­ting bill cuts the salary of Prime Min­is­ter Brian Cowen 6 per­cent to € 214 000 (R1.9m) and his min­is­ters 5 per­cent to € 181 000.

Ire­land’s min­i­mum wage is be­ing slashed 12 per­cent to € 7.65 per hour – still third­high­est in the 27-nation Euro­pean Union be­low France and Lux­em­bourg.
