Sizwe scheme to oppose curatorship application

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - FINANCE -

Sizwe Medical Fund will oppose the application by the Registrar of Medical Schemes to place the scheme under curatorship, its board says.

Dr Monwabisi Gantsho, the registrar, applied to the South Gauteng High Court for a curatorship order this week alleging that the scheme has been operating an unregistered option, has failed to pay in full for prescribed minimum benefits as required by law, and that its officers are not fit and proper.

The board says the findings of an inspector appointed by the Registrar are either factually or legally unsustainable and there are no material irregularities which justify the need for curatorship for the scheme that covers 160 000 lives. The matter is likely to be heard next year. – Laura du Preez
