Blue Route Mall project on track for launch of new centre in 2012
THE R850 million redevelopment of Blue Route Mall is progressing steadily and was more than 20 percent complete at the end of last month.
The Tokai retail centre is owned by Fountainhead Property Trust and managed by Broll Property Management.
The project has been divided into four phases.
The first phase started in April and involved the demolition of a portion of the existing centre.
Existing tenants were temporarily housed in an additional wing that was added at entrance two in July. All demolition work has been completed and the bulk excavation for the basement parking is already well under way.
Phase two was started in October and entailed the construction of the new centre, while trading continues at the remaining portion of the mall.
A new mall extension to Checkers Hyper has been open for business since the beginning of last month, and includes two new public toilets.
A walkway links Checkers Hyper to Woolworths to ensure the centre remains convenient and comfortable for all shoppers, says Wendy Radford of Broll Property Management, the Blue Route Mall centre manager. “An extra 700 undercover parking bays will be available in July, pushing the total number of parking bays available to customers to 1 500.
“Leases that have been secured for the new mall are t h e P e p ko r G r o u p, w h i c h includes Ackermans, Pep, Shoe City, Jay Jays and Hang Ten; t h e E d c o n G r o u p, w h i c h includes Jet, Edgars and CNA; the Foschini Group, which includes @Home, Exact, Sterns, Fashion Express, Foschini Emporium, DonnaClaire, Markham, American Swiss and Matrix, as well as Totalsports and Sportscene; the Truworths Group (Truworths and Identity); and independent stores such as Harris and D’Arcy Jewellers, Dis-Chem Pharmacy and Sheet Street.”
The launch of the new mall, set to be complete in 2012, has seen a professional team of 14 companies working an estimated two million man-hours to complete the development.
