Kens­ing­ton blaze burns two peo­ple to death

TWO PEO­PLE were burnt to death when a fire razed shacks in Kens­ing­ton yes­ter­day.

Fire and Res­cue spokesman Theo Layne said they re­sponded to an emer­gency call around 1.20pm, af­ter eight wood-and-iron shacks in 8th Street caught alight.

He said two adults, a man and a woman, died. Their iden­ti­ties were as yet un­known.

The blaze was put out by fire­fight­ers in just over an hour.

Kens­ing­ton po­lice spokes­woman War­rant Of­fi­cer Ntombi Nqun­qeka said the woman was be­lieved to be around 40 and the man in his early 50s.

An in­quest docket has been opened.

Three weeks ago, eight peo­ple, in­clud­ing a young woman who was four months preg­nant, died in fires around Cape Town.

In Barcelona NY108, a fam­ily of five died when their home was en­gulfed in flames. An­other two peo­ple died in a fire in El­iz­a­beth Street, Kalk­fontein, near Bishop Lavis and one died in Inkanini in Khayelit­sha.

Just a cou­ple of days ear­lier, the fam­ily of a Gugulethu woman, Mzox­olo Hlalayedwa – in­clud­ing her chil­dren, hus- band and brother-in-law – died when a blaze de­mol­ished their shack.
