Kensington blaze burns two people to death
TWO PEOPLE were burnt to death when a fire razed shacks in Kensington yesterday.
Fire and Rescue spokesman Theo Layne said they responded to an emergency call around 1.20pm, after eight wood-and-iron shacks in 8th Street caught alight.
He said two adults, a man and a woman, died. Their identities were as yet unknown.
The blaze was put out by firefighters in just over an hour.
Kensington police spokeswoman Warrant Officer Ntombi Nqunqeka said the woman was believed to be around 40 and the man in his early 50s.
An inquest docket has been opened.
Three weeks ago, eight people, including a young woman who was four months pregnant, died in fires around Cape Town.
In Barcelona NY108, a family of five died when their home was engulfed in flames. Another two people died in a fire in Elizabeth Street, Kalkfontein, near Bishop Lavis and one died in Inkanini in Khayelitsha.
Just a couple of days earlier, the family of a Gugulethu woman, Mzoxolo Hlalayedwa – including her children, hus- band and brother-in-law – died when a blaze demolished their shack.
