Two in court after eight killed
“YOU are evil and you deserve to rot in hell,” a woman shouted in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court as a mother and son accused of killing eight members of the Mabhida family made their first court appearance yesterday.
Irene Ngubane, 38, and her son, Thembinkosi, 21, face eight counts of murder and arson after the Mabhida family was murdered on Monday.
Their bodies were bur nt beyond recognition at the family home in Mpola, Dassenhoek, Marianhill.
Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said the attackers had locked the sleeping victims inside and poured petrol through the gaps underneath the doors.
Despite allegations by neighbours that the victims had received death threats after being accused of witchcraft, Mdunge said that was not the motive for the attack.
At court yesterday, infuriated relatives and neighbours wept softly while others lashed out at the suspects, swearing at them.
Both Ngubanes kept their heads down as angry spectators in court hurled insults at them.
The case was postponed to December 23 for a bail hearing.
