THOUSANDS of cases of assault of prisoners by their fellow inmates and prison staff were reported to the authorities over the past two years.
Between 2008 and September this year, 13 229 assaults were reported, most by inmates, with fellow prisoners the victims. Of these, 2 635 assaults were allegedly by prison staff on inmates. But only 394 convictions resulted, 40 of them of warders.
