Stats show high level of jail as­sault

THOU­SANDS of cases of as­sault of pris­on­ers by their fel­low in­mates and prison staff were re­ported to the au­thor­i­ties over the past two years.

Be­tween 2008 and Septem­ber this year, 13 229 as­saults were re­ported, most by in­mates, with fel­low pris­on­ers the vic­tims. Of these, 2 635 as­saults were al­legedly by prison staff on in­mates. But only 394 con­vic­tions re­sulted, 40 of them of warders.

Mean­while, Cor­rec­tional Ser­vices Min­is­ter No­siviwe Mapisa-Nqakula re­vealed in a writ­ten re­ply to a par­lia­men­tary ques­tion this week that her depart­ment had paid R6.75 mil­lion in salaries of se­nior of­fi­cials sus­pended on full pay since April last year.
