THERE are hundreds of ways of telling the Christmas story, but Alida van Deventer does it with story-table figures.
Alida, who lives in Joburg, has been telling the Christmas story with carved wooden marionettes – wooden puppets on strings. She has a special puppet theatre at her home, but also takes the puppets to many places, even as far as the Ukraine.
Her children, Gerda, Cobus, Elsje and Lisa, grew up among the puppets, and have helped her.
This year Alida had a new idea. She started telling the story with table figures, and then decided to photograph the the scenes she had created.
Now with the help of her daughters, she has produced a book from the photographs. Elsje took the pictures, Lisa designed the book, and Gerda wrote the story.
