Petrol price down, diesel up
THERE’S some good news ahead for South African motorists who, from Wednesday, will pay 11c per litre less for petrol.
The retail price of diesel will, however, increase between 44c and 47c per litre.
The new prices were approved by Energy Minister Dipuo Peters, and form part of the operating costs recoveries and investor margins of the price structures of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin.
Although the decrease in the petrol price will be welcome, the joy may be short-lived warn analysts, who say the announcement is not good news for the country.
The increase in diesel prices will mean major changes for consumers.
Gary Ronald, the public affairs manager at Automobile Association (AA) South Africa, said the decrease would not bring savings generally, since most price factors were associated with the price of diesel.
“Such a huge increase in the price of diesel will mean big changes to the prices of items on the shelves of shops across the country,” he warned, adding that the timing was bad with the approaching festive season.
