Christmas goat ablaze
STOCKHOLM: A 13m high straw Christmas goat went up in flames yesterday in the Swedish town of Gavle, police said.
It was not known who set light to the goat that was recently erected on a square in the town.
The tradition of erecting a giant version of the traditional Swedish Christmas symbol dates to 1966, and attempts to set fire to it have an equally long history. It has been burnt 28 times, first on New Year’s Eve in 1966.
The sponsors of the goat said mild weather had prevented plans to douse the straw in water, which would have created a protective ice sheet. – Sapa-dpa
