Bar: Mexican Kitchen Address: 13 Bloem Street 021 423 0541 Cocktail: Mexican Zombi Price: R35 Ingredients: two shots of Havana dark rum, granadilla syrup, eight shots of orange juice, a splash of Stroh rum and orange zest for garnishing. BE AWARE. Be aware. The Mexican Zombi is as lethal as the name implies. The potent potion has a generous, yet well disguised, serving of Stroh rum.
Barman Luciano Sauramba describes the drink as both built and shaken. He shakes orange juice with the Havana rum, then pours it over ice, adds the Stroh rum “splash” and then garnishes with orange zest and a fruit wheel.
Mexican Kitchen owner Joshua Strydom described it as a “drinker’s drink”. “It is popular with young people and students. It’s a strong drink, not a joke,” he says.
Mexican Kitchen is located just off Long Street, on a corner close enough for a detour up the street during one of those epic pub crawls.
Puffers can do their business at the outside tables. There is no Wifi.
Mexican Kitchen is open seven days a week from 9.30am to late. Drinks are served from 1.30pm. Happy Hour is from 2pm to 6pm during which cocktails are R21. A discount of 20 percent applies with a student card. – Wendylmartin
