December 15 is traditionally the day Christmas bonuses and December salaries are paid.

FNB, South Africa’s third largest bank, noted a record number of transactions – processing over 1 000 transactions a second at one point. Spokeswoman Vir- ginia Magatapona said this included transactions across all platforms including point of sale, online banking, cellphone banking and ATMS.

Magatapona said the peak of 1 069 transactions a second was up 13.2 percent from last year. Most of the growth was seen in the online and cellphone banking channels.

“Volumes typically peak at the onset of holiday seasons. The highest peaks are seen from mid-december as people complete their Christmas shopping and many companies pay salaries a few days earlier than normal.”
