Flowers save rice crops

HANOI: Vietnamese rice farmers have been using fragrant flowers to save their crops from pests.

Mekong Delta farmers have been growing banks of nectar- rich flowers along their paddy fields to attract wasps that prey on the brown plant- hopper, which destroys thousands of hectares of paddy.

The wasps feed on the flowers’ nectar, but deposit their eggs in the adult planthoppers, which are destroyed when the larvae hatch.
