GROOVING and jiving the night away in a picturesque setting complete with colourful fireworks may be your ideal New Year’s Eve celebration. Then there are a number of other options from family fun runs to theatre. The Good Weekend brings you a few cool ideas for how to say goodbye to 2011. STREET PARTY Dancing is how many like to party on New Year’s Eve.
The fifth Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Cape Town, Rocks the Mother City New Year’s Eve Street Party will feature Metro FM jocks Glen Lewis and DJ Naves.
Johan Cronjé, general manager of the hotel, says: “This is the flagship event for us every year.”
The party’s VVIP Champagne Lounge will be on the hotel’s private pool deck overlooking the main dance floor and VIP areas. Entry here costs R1 500 and includes a bottle of Mumm Champagne, a spread of food and access to the entire event. General admission tickets are R120 pre-sale or R150 at the door. Starting 7am on December 31, with a race briefing at 6.45am, the event includes a run/walk (4.8km) and mountain bike (15/35/70km) and road bike (20/40km) routes.

If you want a sunset hike on your last evening of the year, try the Delvera Hi-tec New Year’s Eve Sunset Hike, which starts at 5.30pm, with sunset at 8pm. It starts at the Dirtopia Trail Centre on Delvera Farm on the R44, between Klapmuts and Stellenbosch. The routes are 9.75km or 5km.
For R80 (children nine or under pay R40) you get a permit, map, optional shuttle service and a glass of sparkling wine or juice.
The farm will close at 10pm and the latest time to hike back is 8.15pm. Take a torch and something warm to wear. Wear hiking shoes. This year it is doing a live city link-up between parties being held simultaneously in Cape Town and Ballito in KwazuluNatal.

THEATRE On New Year’s Eve, three of the Baxter’s plays, David Kramer’s musical comedy Some Like it Vrot, Nik Rabinowitz’s hilarious Stand and Deliver and Alistair Izobell’s toe-tapping Vocal is Lekka, will be preformed. This will be followed by a New Year’s Eve party in the foyer straight after the shows featuring live band Chapter.

Guests will be welcomed with a glass of JC le Roux and the sounds of the band Bone Idol 5. There will be a floating buffet of sumptuous food.
Tickets for Pretty in Pink cost R550 a person and, as the name suggests, come dressed in pink.

MUSIC If refined music is your nectar, the Nederburg Wine Farm in Paarl is hosting an outdoor concert with music by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra ( CPO), conducted by Richard Cock and featuring celebrated songbird Judith Sephuma and tenor Edmondo Rahme. Bring your own picnic basket, blanket, folding chairs and glasses. No drinks allowed. Nederburg wine, bubbly, soft drinks and coffee will be on sale. Gates open at 7.30pm and the concert starts at 9.30pm.
Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture will lead the audience into 2012.

If pop is your mantra, Idols run- ner up L’loyd Cele is performing at Golden Valley Casino in Worcester, The show starts at 9pm and tickets are R80 each at the door. Expect songs from his new album One as well as from Cele’s repertoire. BEACH PARTY The Grand Cafe and Beach is a trendy faux beach with real sand in Granger Bay. It’s a beautiful spot, complete with wicker hammocks. They are hosting One Night of Pacha on New Year’s Eve with leading Pacha DJ Andy Baxter. The party starts at 10pm. Tickets cost R750 per person. Adults pay R97.50 and children R47.50 for a return ticket. The last car up on December 31 is at 11pm, and the last car down at 1am. Visitors can bring their own bubbly and picnics or grab a seat at the Table Mountain Café which will extend operating hours until after midnight on New Year’s Eve.
