Barlady Buseka Ndzule says to make it she places strawberries in a glass and crushes them into a purée before adding two shots of rum and then passion fruit syrup, a lime mixture, mint and crushed ice. This is then stirred in the glass, given a splash of soda water and garnished with seasonal fruit.
The resultant cocktail tastes richly of strawberry. Although it has a thick texture, I was able to pull the mixture of fruit flesh through my straw.
A colleague found it highly palatable, if sweet, and less shocking than other more potent mixes. She described it as a well-balanced drink.
Ndzule says it is popular with younger people.
The iconic orange-themed restaurant in Kloof Street is a vibey, popular choice for breakfast, lunch and drinks and the wooden benches on the patio can get very full.
The restaurant offers a view of the mountain and Kloof Street. Smoking is allowed outside, at one of nine tables.
Arnolds is open Monday to Friday, from 6.45am to 10.30pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, from 8am to 10.30pm. Happy Hour specials are available from 11am to 6.30pm throughout the week. – Wendyl Martin
