Zim warned of heavy rains, floods

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS -

HARARE: Zimbabwe’s weather department issued a flood alert saying heavy rains are expected to continue.

The Meteorological Service says downpours of nearly 8cm are forecast in the north and east until January 2.

The government’s civil protection agency also advised affected commu- nities to find shelter on higher ground.

It warned that roofs could be blown off and mud-built houses could collapse from rain and flooding.

Broken drainage and sewers have led to outbreaks of waterborne diseases. More than 4 000 people died from cholera in 2008. – Sapa-ap
