New planet is also blue

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NEWS -

LONDON: Astronomers have for the first time determined the colour of a planet outside the solar system, a blue gas giant some 63 light years away.

An international team of astronomers working with the Hubble Telescope made the discovery observing the planet HD 189733B.

To ascertain the planet’s colour, astronomers measured the light reflected off its surface as it eclipsed its host star.

The planet belongs to a group of “hot Jupiters” and has a temperature of about 1 000°C. – Sapa-AP
