Thank you SA, says Man­dela Foun­da­tion

THE NEL­SON Man­dela Foun­da­tion thanked South Africans and the world yes­ter­day for sup­port­ing Man­dela Day.

“One man’s vi­sion has in­deed in­spired a global move­ment for good,” chief ex­ec­u­tive Sello Hatang said in a state­ment.

“The ac­tions taken by in­di­vid­u­als and groups alike show the reach and im­pact of our beloved Madiba’s legacy, and the dif­fer­ence that can be made in peo­ple com­ing to­gether to drive change.”

In 2009, July 18, Man­dela’s birth­day, was de­clared Man­dela Day in South Africa. The UN has de­clared July 18 In­ter­na­tional Nel­son Man­dela Day.

Hatang thanked the Man- dela fam­ily, Pres­i­dent Ja­cob Zuma, the me­dia and “pub­lic cit­i­zens both lo­cally and in­ter­na­tion­ally” among oth­ers for their con­tri­bu­tions.

“Key to this day and ini­tia­tive is to re­mem­ber, it’s in your hands to make ev­ery day a Man­dela Day,” he said.

“It is our duty to con­tinue to grow the mo­men­tum that you have all al­ready in­spired to pro­mote and re­alise so­cial jus­tice.”

Man­dela spent his 95th birth­day on Thurs­day at the Medi­clinic Heart hos­pi­tal in Pre­to­ria. He was ad­mit­ted on June 8 for a lung in­fec­tion.

Pres­i­dency spokesman Mac Ma­haraj said in a state­ment that Man­dela’s health was steadily im­prov­ing. – Sapa
