Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - GOODMOVIES -

A somber and striking drama about fathers and sons that takes some wrong turns, but features a charismatic performance from Ryan Gosling. The drama unfolds in three sections set over 15 years. Its weakness is that while the events follow in plot terms, they don’t achieve the smoothest flow. ★★★ Peeples: Craig Robinson and Kerry Washington star in this Tyler Perryproduced film about a man meeting his girlfriend’s parents during a family get-together gone awry. ★★★ Scary Movie 5: Spoofing movies ranging from Black Swan to Mama to Paranormal Activity, this instalment of the franchise is painfully unfunny, and notable only for its cameos from Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. ★

The Wolverine: Hugh Jackman takes his mutant to Japan in director James Mangold’s X-Men spinoff, which dials back the city-razing computergenerated mayhem in favour of more grounded action. But, as a follow-up of sorts to an origin story spun off from a trilogy, it’s hardly a game-changer, as Jackman’s mutant finds himself wrestling with his inner demons and a cavalcade of ninjas. ★★★ The Place Beyond the Pines:
