Bar: Kloof Street House Address: 30 Kloof Street Hours: 021 423 4413 Cocktail: Tree of Life Price: R60 Ingredients: Earl Grey tea, riesling white wine, green grapes, Belvedere Vodka, vanilla sugar and torn basil SOMETIMES, if you have the cash to spare, it’s worth paying a little more for a good drink. The Tree of Life makes for a good change from the sweet fare I am so often exposed to for this column,
Chris Zoeller, Kloof Street House’s general manager, says he makes the drink by first muddling grapes with basil then building it over crushed ice. He garnishes the glass with basil and skewered grapes.
The drink had subtle flavours of vanilla but still held a dry taste. The texture was slightly pulpy, and halved grape chunks were visible.
The drink is big on savoury flavours, not masking the vodka flavours with fruity purées.
Kloof Street House is an ornamental vintage eyeful: from the suitcases that look like they are holding up the bar counter to the framed mirrors, bird cages, palm tree pots and fireplaces.
In winter, it is open on Sundays from noon to 3pm, Mondays from 5pm to 11pm and Tuesdays to Saturdays from noon to 11pm. – Wendyl Martin email@example.com Twitter:@WendylMartin
