The Tree of Life makes for a good change from the sweet fare I am so of­ten ex­posed to for this col­umn,

Chris Zoeller, Kloof Street House’s gen­eral man­ager, says he makes the drink by first mud­dling grapes with basil then build­ing it over crushed ice. He gar­nishes the glass with basil and skew­ered grapes.

The drink had sub­tle flavours of vanilla but still held a dry taste. The tex­ture was slightly pulpy, and halved grape chunks were vis­i­ble.

The drink is big on savoury flavours, not mask­ing the vodka flavours with fruity purées.

Kloof Street House is an or­na­men­tal vin­tage eye­ful: from the suit­cases that look like they are hold­ing up the bar counter to the framed mir­rors, bird cages, palm tree pots and fire­places.
