Kids die, 40 home­less af­ter Steen­berg blaze

Western Cape po­lice spokesman Colonel Tem­binkosi Ki­nana said their re­ports were that only one child had died. Res­i­dents at the scene did not know where the par­ents were, so the num­ber could not be ver­i­fied.

Ki­nana said: “The child was in the shack to­gether with par­ents when their house caught fire, to­gether with about 14 other shacks in the area. It is be­lieved that a two- year- old child died, while the par­ents were rushed to the hos­pi­tal for med­i­cal treat­ment.”

He said the cause of the fire was still be­ing in­ves­ti­gated.

El­rico McCarthy, who lives nearby, said peo­ple had been run­ning along the rooftops with buck­ets of wa­ter.

“I al­most broke my leg,” he said.

Another neigh­bour, Jo­hanna Harmse, said ev­ery- one who saw the smoke ran to help and throw wa­ter on the fire.

Phindiwe Mzantsi ar­rived home from work yes­ter­day af­ter­noon to find her house burnt to the ground. She has lived there with her fam­ily for six years.

“I have noth­ing now, I’m just like this,” she said, cry­ing and point­ing to her clothes and hand­bag.
