Western Cape police spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said their reports were that only one child had died. Residents at the scene did not know where the parents were, so the number could not be verified.
Kinana said: “The child was in the shack together with parents when their house caught fire, together with about 14 other shacks in the area. It is believed that a two- year- old child died, while the parents were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.”
He said the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
Elrico McCarthy, who lives nearby, said people had been running along the rooftops with buckets of water.
“I almost broke my leg,” he said.
Another neighbour, Johanna Harmse, said every- one who saw the smoke ran to help and throw water on the fire.
Phindiwe Mzantsi arrived home from work yesterday afternoon to find her house burnt to the ground. She has lived there with her family for six years.
“I have nothing now, I’m just like this,” she said, crying and pointing to her clothes and handbag.
