Coun­cil pro­vides de­tails about builders’ hol­i­day

THE BUILD­ING In­dus­try Bar­gain­ing Coun­cil (Cape of Good Hope) has con­firmed that the first day of the an­nual builders’ hol­i­days for this year will be the 17th of next month and the in­dus­try re­opens on Jan­uary 13.

The du­ra­tion of the builders’ an­nual leave is tra­di­tion­ally 15 work­ing days, plus the three pub­lic hol­i­days that fall within the leave pe­riod, and is leg­is­lated as part of the coun­cil’s col­lec­tive agree­ment.

This year, the coun­cil again ne g o t i at e d a n a d d i t i o nal un­paid leave day, since the start of the work­ing pe­riod would oth­er­wise have been Fri­day, Jan­uary 10.

The build­ing in­dus­try shut­down pe­riod is de­ter­mined by the coun­cil by no later than June 30 each year. Em­ploy­ees may agree with their em­ploy­ers to work dur­ing the an­nual leave pe­riod and will be paid the ba­sic wage paid for any t i me worked d ur i ng t hi s pe­riod.

Se­cu­rity guards and other em­ploy­ees who work dur­ing this pe­riod will, by agree­ment with their em­ploy­ers, be granted leave, equal to the pe­riod worked dur­ing the an­nual close.

The coun­cil has is­sued a re­minder for any­one car­ry­ing out build­ing work to en­sure that the con­trac­tor em­ployed is reg­is­tered and com­pli­ant with it. Visit or call 021 950 7400 for more in­for­ma­tion.
