UWC to celebrate Madiba

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - NELSON MANDELA 1918-2013 - REBECCA JACKMAN

AN exhibition celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela is to open at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) with a book of remembrance for people to express their condolences to the Mandela family.

The exhibition will be held in the foyer of UWC’s main hall from 8am until 6pm on Monday, and from 6am until 6pm from Tuesday until Mandela’s funeral next Sunday.

The aim was to “reflect on the meaning of Nelson Mandela and his commitment towards building a postapartheid future”, the university said.

Mandela was awarded an honorary doctorate by UWC in 1990 for his political vision for educational transformation – at the core of UWC’s efforts to transcend the burden of apartheid education.

“The commitments that have shaped building a postapartheid university remain true to the struggle for democracy and non-racialism.

“The ideals that Madiba stood for should be at the heart of the events planned over the 10 days of mourning,” said Professor Brian O’Connell, UWC’s rector and vicechancellor.
