‘Pivotal’ in Aids fight
NELSON Mandela’s support of HIV/ Aids research was commendable, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) said yesterday.
Board chairman Nasima Badsha said Mandela helped produce the study on national HIV prevalence, behavioural risks and the media household survey in 2002.
“Through his trusted adviser, the late Professor Jakes Gerwel, and former chairman of the HSRC board, Mr Mandela supported the HSRC in its work on HIV/ Aids at the time when the government was in denial.”
Chief executive Olive Shisana said Mandela was a great leader “pivotal in the fight against HIV/Aids in this country”. – Sapa
