San Francisco lays on cheer

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - TRAVEL 2013 - WANDA HENNIG

MULTI-FACETED, foodobsessed, scenic, artsy – San Francisco is a seductive party city all year round.

As the festive season approaches, tall city buildings are decked with lights, a massive tree goes up in Union Square and public outdoor ice skating rinks open. One is at Union Square and a second is near the Ferry Plaza on the Embarcadero.

Biggest happening this year and the reason Lonely Planet chose San Francisco as the world’s best city to visit in 2013 was all the waterfront titivating that took place in preparation for the 34th America’s Cup.

The revamped Embarcadero has a new Exploratorium ( the state-of-the-art museum of science, art and human perception).

The TCHO chocolate company offers tours and tastes of what can best be described as chocolate for sophisticated palates.

An artistic highlight is a sculptural light installation on the Bay Bridge using 25 000 white LEDs and computer- driven imagery. The artist-created display dances on the bridge nightly in everchanging patterns.
