Real guitar heroes united
THE INTERNATIONAL Guitar Night summer series returned to South Africa this week, bringing guitar stalwart Tony Cox’s appreciation of the instrument to the intimate setting of Olympia Café in Kalk Bay.
The young Italian, Andrea Valeri, also returns, with his signature Sultans of Swing arrangement and more. The aim of Cox’s International Guitar Night is to bring accomplished acoustic guitar players to South African audiences.
Cox says of his co-biller, who last played here two years ago: “He’s phenomenal. It doesn’t matter what he plays, he gets standing ovations for every show.”
He met Valeri in 2009 when he was invited to play at the Madame Guitar Festival in Tricesimo, Italy. By then, Cox had been running IGN for two years and he decided he wanted South Africans to see Valeri.
The 22-year-old guitar fundi, who says he never formally learned the art, loved his previous visit to the country: “It was great. It was a turning point in my life. I love the warmth of people here… Olympia is magical. It’s easy to bring people on stage there.
”When I was a small boy I played with a friend. That was only 10 years ago,” he joked. He and a friend wanted to assemble a full band. He had a 20year-old guitar and began to use his hands to play bass and percussion. He later found out this was called fingerstyle playing.
Meanwhile, Cox will be showcasing music from his upcoming recording, Padkos, at IGN.
“I’ve never done covers before. These are covers of South African songs,” he says. Expect the likes of Sarie Marais, Weeping and Jabulani, done in his fingerstyle.
