At the coast, the price of 95octane petrol will be R13.20 a litre, up from R12.82 a litre, while in Gauteng it rises to a record high of R13.57 a litre, from R13.19 a litre the month before. Both grades of diesel will cost 32c/l more.

The price of illuminating paraffin will increase between 39c/l and 52c/l, while the maximum retail price for LP gas will increase by 56c/kilogram.

The increase will be the second in two months, after the price of all grades of petrol was hiked 17c/l at the beginning of the month, coinciding with the implementation of e-tolling on Gauteng highways.

Explaining the increase, the department said the average international prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin had increased from November 29 to December 26.

The fuel levy would increase to 10.96c/l from Wednesday, the energy fund said.

The price of fuel in South Africa has risen by 252 percent over the past decade, and by 276 percent for diesel.
