Six rob­bers killed in Grey­town, KZN

A HUGE man­hunt is un­der way in KwaZulu-Na­tal for “brazen” armed gang­sters in­volved in a deadly shoot-out with po­lice.

Six gang mem­bers, be­lieved to be in­volved in a rob­bery in New­cas­tle yes­ter­day, were killed in the shoot-out out­side Grey­town. Three were wounded, and taken to hos­pi­tal un­der guard, as po­lice mounted their search for sev­eral other sus­pects who fled in two cars.

MEC for Trans­port, Com­mu­nity Safety and Li­ai­son Wil­lies Mchunu praised the brav­ery and swift re­ac­tion of po­lice in con­fronting the “brazen and ma­raud­ing crim­i­nals”. Po­lice spokesman Ma­jor Thu­lani Zwane said apart from be­ing sus­pects in the New­cas­tle rob­bery, they were sus­pected of be­ing in­volved in a spate of busi­ness rob­beries on the North Coast.

They were also sus­pected of killing at least one po­lice­man and hav­ing a hand in the wound­ing of Fly­ing Squad of­fi­cer Ashok Ram­sukkan in KwaMashu. One AK47 as­sault ri­fle, two R5 as­sault ri­fles and two hand­guns were re­cov­ered from the shoot-out scene, which was closed by po­lice. The weapons have been sent for bal­lis­tics test­ing, while charges of at­tempted mur­der, pos­ses­sion of un­li­censed firearms and am­mu­ni­tion have been laid.
