Six robbers killed in Greytown, KZN
A HUGE manhunt is under way in KwaZulu-Natal for “brazen” armed gangsters involved in a deadly shoot-out with police.
Six gang members, believed to be involved in a robbery in Newcastle yesterday, were killed in the shoot-out outside Greytown. Three were wounded, and taken to hospital under guard, as police mounted their search for several other suspects who fled in two cars.
MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu praised the bravery and swift reaction of police in confronting the “brazen and marauding criminals”. Police spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said apart from being suspects in the Newcastle robbery, they were suspected of being involved in a spate of business robberies on the North Coast.
They were also suspected of killing at least one policeman and having a hand in the wounding of Flying Squad officer Ashok Ramsukkan in KwaMashu. One AK47 assault rifle, two R5 assault rifles and two handguns were recovered from the shoot-out scene, which was closed by police. The weapons have been sent for ballistics testing, while charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition have been laid.
