In­jured hiker air­lifted from Jonker­shoek moun­tains

A SE­VERELY in­jured hiker was forced to spend the night in icy con­di­tions near a wa­ter­fall on the Jonker­shoek moun­tains be­fore be­ing air­lifted to safety dur­ing an in­tri­cate op­er­a­tion yes­ter­day.

Luck­ily the 20-year-old man was kept un­der the watch­ful eye of res­cuers through­out the night.

It was not clear what led to the in­ci­dent, nor the ex­tent of his in­juries.

Wilder­ness Search and Res­cue spokesman Jo­hann Marais said re­ports were re­ceived late on Thursday about a man who had not re­turned from a hike. Two res­cue teams were as­sem­bled around 8pm on Thursday.

Res­cuers sta­bilised the hiker and de­cided it was best that he stay on the moun­tain for the night.
