Injured hiker airlifted from Jonkershoek mountains
A SEVERELY injured hiker was forced to spend the night in icy conditions near a waterfall on the Jonkershoek mountains before being airlifted to safety during an intricate operation yesterday.
Luckily the 20-year-old man was kept under the watchful eye of rescuers throughout the night.
It was not clear what led to the incident, nor the extent of his injuries.
Wilderness Search and Rescue spokesman Johann Marais said reports were received late on Thursday about a man who had not returned from a hike. Two rescue teams were assembled around 8pm on Thursday.
Rescuers stabilised the hiker and decided it was best that he stay on the mountain for the night.
