Anti-gay flyer not our doing, says charity
A LOCAL branch of an international aid organisation that has found itself the target of an apparent smear campaign which began four years ago, has urged residents to help them identify who is behind it.
Over the years, the campaign, which calls for gays and lesbians to be killed and which falsely names the organisation Muslim Hands as being involved, has resurfaced through flyers circulated locally.
Muslim Hands works to tackle the causes of poverty and has an office in Rylands.
In the latest resurgence of the campaign, a flyer was sent to a club in Parow catering to gay clientele.
A section of the flyer said: “Kill all gays and lesbians all over the world. Kill the bast*rds.”
It listed the UK head of Muslim Hands, as well as the owner of the Rylands business, Taj Radio and TV Centre, as its commanders.
Muslim Hands SA is affiliated to the broader organisation launched in the UK in 1993.
This week Muslim Hands SA manager Imraan Roomaney said the organisation was not linked to the flyer in any way.
“Since 2012 we have been victims of a vicious slur campaign, the reasons which we cannot fathom,” a press release by the organisation said.
“Defamatory letters are sent to various people via post, falsely accusing our members of things not befitting our esteemed organisation.”
The landlord of the building housing Muslim Hands SA is MH Parker, the owner of the Rylands business also named on the flyer. Parker said he had approached police about the matter and had hired a private investigator to look into it.
Anyone with information about the flyer or campaign should call Muslim Hands on email@example.com or 021 633 6413.
