Under-24s have mixed views on poll

- NOLOYISO MTEMBU

YOUNG people in the Cape Town metro are undecided about whether to take part in this week’s municipal election, or to give the polls a miss.

Some aren’t registered to vote, while others have yet to decide on which party will get their proportional representation ballot, according to a snap poll conducted by Weekend Argus.

Those canvassed, aged between 19 and 23, had varied views.

Sive Ndakisa, 19, from Philippi, said he hadn’t registered and wouldn’t vote. He wasn’t interested in politics, or in the elections.

Anwar Diedericks, 19, of Woodstock, also wasn’t interested.

“I did not register because I do not see the point. None of the political parties represent me,” he said.

Grassy Park resident Jason Warwick, 21, said although he had registered, he was not sure he would vote.

“At the moment it’s a maybe. I have not decided to vote or on who to vote for,” he said.

Zita Peters, 19, of Athlone, said she was concerned about gangsterism in her community.

“I don’t think my vote will make a difference so I am not voting. Besides, no party is good enough,” she said.

Perushka Martin, 20, of Sea Point, won’t vote because she hasn’t registered.

“I was too busy. But if I were to vote, I would look at the history of a party and how they have performed before voting for them,” she said.

Thandokazi Pangalele, 20, of Gugulethu, also missed registration.

“If I were to get an opportunity, I would vote for a party that would end informal settlements. Life in a shack is not pleasant. Safety is also a problem where I live,” she said.

For Durbanville residents Aden Washer, 20, and Marco Laubscher, 22, participating in the election was paramount.

“I will vote for a party which, hopefully, has the least corruption,” Washer said.

Laubscher added: “I will vote for the same party I have voted for before. They have done a good job so far.”

Pumza Mundia, 23, of Table View, is registered and will vote.

“If I do not vote then I won’t have a say. We all make our voices heard,” Mundia said, adding education and job opportunities were her concerns. noloyiso.mtembu@inl.co.za
