Heavy meme weather for Hlaudi
HLAUDI Motsoeneng has always been a character.
He is the king of quotable quotes and the archetype of a Teflon man.
South Africans were stunned this week when the SABC appointed him head of corporate affairs, soon after the Supreme Court of Appeal had ruled his appointment as chief operations officer was unlawful, and had disrespected the rule of law.
Not only was he reappointed, but the public broadcaster also rewarded Motsoeneng with a whopping R11.4 million bonus for selling its archives to MultiChoice.
This time, however, the ANC was livid.
The party’s chief whip Jackson Mthembu described the “shenanigans” and “mess-ups” at the SABC as an “embarrassment”.
The matter is said to be a top discussion point that may cause serious divisions at the party’s national executive committee this weekend.
The board is due to appear before the committee next Wednesday, and should the inquiry find wrongdoing, the committee can recommend the board be dissolved.
On Thursday Motsoeneng announced that the SABC had posted a loss of R411m for 2015/16, after a loss of R400m last year.
The year before that, the SABC posted a loss of more than R500m.
But its new head of corporate affairs was unfazed, saying the SABC was “not in the business of making a profit”, and that its mandate was that of public service.
South Africans were appalled, with many taking to social media to express their disgust with Motsoeneng and the current board members.
But no “embarrassment” or “mess-up” is complete without a meme.
Dozens were posted on Twitter and Facebook this week.
