Muthambi fails to obey the cabinet
COMMUNICATIONS Minister Faith Muthambi has failed to act on the instruction of the cabinet to get the SABC to urgently fire Hlaudi Motsoeneng.
The cabinet instructed Muthambi after the Supreme Court of Appeal judgment two weeks ago that the SABC board must act and dismiss the former chief operating officer immediately.
The lack of implementation of the SCA judgment has brought the SABC and Motsoeneng into conflict with President Jacob Zuma, the cabinet, the ANC caucus in Parliament and the ANC’s national executive committee.
Yesterday Muthambi’s spokesman Mish Molakeng did not respond to questions on the minister’s lack of action.
This week a defiant Motsoeneng fired a salvo at the cabinet saying, it did not understand the law and his constitutional rights.
This left many MPs angry and they have demanded his urgent exit from the corporation.
Muthambi was present at the meeting of the SABC board with Parliament this week, but kept a low profile throughout the proceedings.
A few months ago she was reported to have said Zuma loved Motsoeneng and that everyone needed to support the latter.
Muthambi’s failure to act on the cabinet’s clear instruction on the SCA judgment that Motsoeneng must be axed remained unexplained.
Molakeng did not respond to inquiries, but two weeks ago Muthambi said she hoped the SABC would act in line with the SCA judgment.
But to date nothing has happened and Motsoeneng still has his job despite the clamour for him to go.
The cabinet had warned Motsoeneng and the SABC to respect the court judgments and stop being a law unto themselves. siyabonga.mkhwanazi @inl.co.za
