‘Best to gym in the day’

Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - FRONT PAGE -

LONDON: Workers with little spare time can often end up in the gym at night, pounding the treadmill.

But research suggests this is the worst time to exercise, because our muscles function better during daylight hours.

The study from Northwestern University in the US found muscle cells, like the body clock, respond differently during our 24-hour day.

The cells control the process by which the body makes energy when we are exercising hard – switching from oxygen to sugar for energy.

However, in a study involving mice, this process was found to work better during normal waking hours. It means humans, who share the same genes, may also find their muscles respond better to exercise during the day.

Researchers believe this is because proteins are primed to respond better during a time of day when demand for strenuous activity is usually greatest. – Daily Mail
