Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition) - - FRONT PAGE -

LUDWIGSBURG, GERMANY: WITH Halloween coming, Mathias Willemijns grew a pumpkin of proportions not seen until this year.

The Belgian man set a world record earlier this month with a super squash that weighed 1 190.5kg.

Willemijns claimed the record on October 9 at the Giant Pumpkin European Championship here.

Guinness World Records has yet to confirm it.

The previous world-record pumpkin was 1 053.7kg.

Swiss grower Beni Meier set that record in 2014 at the European Championships.

The US is the home of pumpkins and Halloween but nothing grown there has come close to the world record.

Winners of giant-pumpkin contests often receive big cash prizes. World champion Cindy Tobeck was no exception and won $11 460 (R159 294). – Washington Post
