Hawks take down sus­pected scam­mers

A STATE pros­e­cu­tor is among five peo­ple who have been ar­rested in the Western Cape by the Direc­torate for Pri­or­ity Crime In­ves­ti­ga­tion (Hawks) in con­nec­tion with a well-known sus­pected pyra­mid scheme in which mil­lions of rand were al­legedly lost.

The Hawks said that yes­ter­day the sus­pects, aged be­tween 38 and 62, were ar­rested on Wed­nes­day for al­leged fraud amount­ing to mil­lions of rand through phoney vouch­ers, rang­ing from R2 700, of­fer­ing dis­counts on ho­tel ac­com­mo­da­tion, hire of ve­hi­cles and plane tick­ets be­tween 2009 and 2014.The five were re­leased on warn­ing and are to ap­pear in the Bel­lville Spe­cialised Com­mer­cial Crime Court on June 29. – ANA
