A key mea­sure is the labour force ab­sorp­tion rate ( or em­ployed peo­ple as a share of the work­ing-age pop­u­la­tion), which has fallen from 45.8% in 2001 to 43.3% to­day.

The of­fi­cial un­em­ploy­ment rate has climbed from 24.6% in 2001 to 27.7%. And the “labour mar­ket par­tic­i­pa­tion rate” (the pro­por­tion of the work­ing-age pop­u­la­tion that is eco­nom­i­cally ac­tive) has dropped from 60.8% in 2001 to 59.9% this year.
