Tenor saxophonis­t Kristen Johnson, 17, said: “I didn’t look at Band Slam as a competitio­n, I looked at it as an opportunit­y to enjoy myself with the Dynamix Band. With the enjoyment came the win. It was a memorable experience.”

Lead vocalist Khonkco Twalo, 15, said: “As a band, we were honestly just grateful to perform for an audience and share our music with anyone willing to listen. What’s important is that we had fun and enjoyed the whole experience.”

Drummer Luke van Eeden, 17, said: “After they announced that we won, I was so happy knowing that all our hard work had paid off. I enjoyed it a lot and I would definitely do it again.”

Johannes is extremely proud of her pupils, despite her initial concern that they had limited time to practise. “I am over the moon. We had a very short time to practise, so even as the day approached, we were nowhere near ready, but at the last minute they somehow pulled it together,” she said.

The future is looking bright for the band and they will put their new equipment to good use.
