El­derly man crit­i­cally in­jured in crash

AN AC­CI­DENT be­tween two cars and a truck on the N1 near Plat­tek­loof on Fri­day, left one man crit­i­cally in­jured.

Rus­sel Meir­ing, ER24 spokesper­son, said paramedics and fire ser­vices at­tended the scene, where they found all three of the ve­hi­cles in the mid­dle of the road.

“Sev­eral peo­ple were found walk­ing around the ve­hi­cles. Upon closer in­spec­tion, paramedics found one man ly­ing trapped in­side one of the ve­hi­cles. The man was found in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion. Res­cue ser­vices had to use spe­cialised equip­ment to free the man from the ve­hi­cle.”

Upon free­ing him, paramedics treated the 71-year-old man and per­formed ad­vanced life sup­port in­ter­ven­tions.

He was later trans­ported to a nearby hos­pi­tal. Kenny Africa, pro­vin­cial traf­fic chief, said they held a traf­fic blitz across the Cape on Fri­day where 1 420 ve­hi­cles were stopped and 1 278 driv­ers were tested for al­co­hol. Three driv­ers were ar­rested for drunk driv­ing.

There were 154 fines is­sued.
