IN PER­HAPS one of the most hyped in­di­vid­ual sales ever, Bon­ham’s achieved the over­all record for the most ex­pen­sive car sold at auc­tion – a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196 Grand Prix car raced by Juan Manuel Fan­gio that sold for just un­der $30 mil­lion.

Many con­sider the Ar­gen­tinian the world’s great­est rac­ing car driver. In seven For­mula One sea­sons – he missed one re­cov­er­ing from a nearly fatal in­jury – he was world cham­pion five times and run­nerup twice.
