Golden tickets in ‘Idols SA’ auditions

Weekend Argus (Sunday Edition) - - NEWS - TANYA PETERSEN

IN THE hopes of receiving a golden ticket, Cape Town hopefuls faced their fears by singing for the panel of Idols SA judges last week.

The recorded auditions, which took place on Wednesday at the Century City Conference Centre, saw scores of hopefuls brave it in front of the judges Randall Abrahams, Somizi Mhlongo, Unathi Msengana and guest judge DJ Cleo.

Somizi and Unathi were very hands on and often got up from their seats to interact with the contestants.

Although there were many “it’s a no from me” from the judges, there were those who impressed them enough to receive a golden ticket.

One hopeful, Miche Beneke, 19, from Macassar, secured a golden ticket.

This, she said, was not the first time she had auditioned, but it was the first time she had impressed the judges.

“They asked me what my name is and where I am from.”

Her song choice, she said, was Leona Lewis’s Here I Am.

She said Randall was not impressed with her audition and gave her a “no”.

However, Unathi told her her lower register was good and DJ Cleo, told her she will make it far in the industry. She received three “yes” votes.

“I couldn’t believe it, I was in total disbelief,” Beneke said.

She said she received immense support from her family and friends.

“My aim is to make it in this industry and I am most excited about meeting new people and learning new things,” she said.

The show is set to screen in July.
