THE popularity of gqom music, which has taken South Africans by storm, could catch on in Spain too.

Durban’s popular duo Distruction Boyz have been invited to perform at the Sonar Electronic Music Festival in Barcelona in June.

They made the announcement this week at a celebratory party at The Joint restaurant at North beach.

The theme was “It was all a dream” which was motivated by the success they have had.

Members of the group Thobani Mgobhozi, 22, and Zipho Mthembu, 22, said they were delighted to have been invited to showcase their style of music in another country.

“We are invited to showcase our style of music, we will be showing people from other countries what gqom music is,” said Mgobhozi.

Under their record label, Distruction Records, they have also signed two new artists, K Dot and Mbuso blackQrythm.

“Our parents taught us that the money we make must be invested.

“All the money we made is invested in business.

“We are using it to also push the two new artists we signed so they can reach our level musically.

“We want to grow not just as Distruction Boyz but as businessmen,” said Mthembu.

The pair have also done an advert for KFC.

“We had an amazing shoot and we worked with the best director. It’s nice to see ourselves on TV and be associated with such a big brand.

“We are happy that we have so much influence and power,” said Mgobhozi.

They thanked DJ Tira for the support and DJ Sox for the motivation.
