Weekend Argus (Sunday Edition) - - NEWS - LUKE FOLB

POLICE have opened a case of murder and attempted murder after a shooting in Lentegeur early yesterday.

The alleged drive-by shooting happened in Marigold Street at about 5.15am. A 20-year-old man was killed and two others, aged 20 and 24, were hurt.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“According to information, the victims were sitting in front of a house when an unknown VW Golf stopped and (the occupants) started to shoot at the victims,” she said.

Lentegeur community policing forum’s Anthea van der Vent said the community was “very upset”.

“It’s become like a daily occurrence here with these shootings and we are concerned for the youth because it is very traumatic for them and maybe this is why some of them turn to gangs.

“We do feel that more pressure needs to be placed on the SAPS and government to intervene here.”

This shooting follows a spate of gun violence in recent weeks.

Three people were shot dead earlier in the month in a drive-by shooting on the corner of Eisleben and Morgenster roads in Lentegeur. A 23-year-old man was shot and killed at Eastridge Clinic in Mitchells Plain two weeks ago.

Earlier in the week, a 25-year-old man was shot dead in his car and another was wounded in a drive-by shooting in Epping. On Thursday, a 63-year-old man, his wife and two children had to be hospitalised after an intruder entered their home in Factreton and opened fire.

The Kensington Community Policing Forum has organised a march today on Sunderland Street.
