Bookworm inspires Mensa trio with 3D storybook app

Weekend Post (South Africa) - - Weekend Life - SAM VENTER

Could this be the ultimate book club wine?

The labels of Mensa wines immediately draw the booklover in – a woman relaxes in a comfy chair in a library, a glass of wine and doggy companion at her side, plus, in a first for SA wine, digital storytelling is added to the mix with a clever augmented reality app that brings the label to life.

Local stockist Benedetta Schafer of Life is Grape in Main Road, Walmer, says book- and wine-lovers are snapping up this new range from Overhex Wines, intrigued by the 3D storybook that pops out of the label like a mini movie when scanned with a smartphone – complete with sounds of pages turning and the happy clamour of people enjoying food and wine.

The whole package creates a multimedia experience of the brand proposition “live a great story”.

“If you love a good story and believe that life is an adventure made better by good wine – Mensa wines are tailor made for you,” they say.

There’s no connection with the international IQ society, by the way – “Mensa” is the nickname of Overhex owner Gerhard van der Wath’s wife (real name Emmarentia), the bookworm and story-teller of the family who inspired the new range.

Beyond the eye-catching labels and their digital manifestation, the wines are easydrinking, crowd-pleasing stuff – ideal for book club night, relaxing with friends round the braai, or curling up with a good book.

The cabernet sauvignon is soft and juicy, with body and lots of fruit and a touch of typical cab fruitcake and dark chocolate, very pleasant indeed.

A fresh and zesty sauvignon blanc is dry, but not super dry, an easy crowd-pleaser, while the chardonnay-pinot noir offers a fresh light pink wine, strawberries with a touch of cream, verging into off-dry territory for those who like their wine slightly sweeter.

Life is Grape currently has them at R105 for the cabernet sauvignon, and R78 for the sauvignon blanc and chardonnay-pinot noir, while stocks last, and they’re hosting a tasting of the wines on November 29 for those who’d like to try before they buy (email wine@lifeis for info and bookings).
