College in another top table clash

Weekend Witness - - Sport - MIKE HILL Schools’ rugby

FOUR KZN schools play opposition teams from Gauteng today. There is an exodus of three schools to Johannesburg, and St Charles will be hosting St Albans from Pretoria. Once again there is a top of the table clash when Maritzburg College host Westville.

Last weekend it was Kearsney — after two successive losses — that beat Maritzburg College and today it is College, after two successive losses, who will be hosting Westville. Will College have enough to beat the strong Westville line-up? The latter did beat Kearsney narrowly at home. In these clashes, playing at home does seem to be an advantage. College will need to have a better game plan than their predictable play last week.

This will be the first home game that St Charles has played this season when they take on St Albans. After a shaky start St Charles has shown some neat touches. Both teams have played Menlopark with St Charles losing 3-38 and St Albans 10-35. St Charles played them early in the season — whereas St Albans played them last week. The improvement that St Charles has shown and the fact that they are playing at home, will give them some confidence.

Glenwood travel across the Umgeni to face Northwood. This could see a big score as Northwood will be low in confidence after losing against Port Natal last week and they don’t have the forwards to prevent Glenwood getting most of the possession.

Another big score could be on the cards in Johannesburg where Hilton play against KES. The latter have a very good side whereas Hilton has a weaker side, compared to their previous years.

The game between Kearsney and St Stithians could be keenly contested as St Stithians have improved since their festival. Last week they lost by eight points against KES after just beating Northwood during the festival.

Michaelhouse are also in Johannesburg at St Johns. The latter — after some initial results that were favourable — have done poorly in their last few matches. If Michaelhouse play well they could come home with a win. Selected fixtures (home side first): Maritzburg College v Westville; St Charles v St Albans; Northwood v Glenwood; KES v Hilton; St Stithians v Kearsney; St Johns v Michaelhouse; DHS v Port Natal; Hillcrest v Carter; Thomas More v St Henrys; Kloof vs Kingsway; DHS I I v KZN Development; Treverton vs Greytown; Port Shepstone v Scottburgh
