‘Newcastle pupil loved rugby’ — mom

Weekend Witness - - News - LUNGA BIYELA

THE Newcastle schoolboy who died while playing rugby on Monday had pleaded with his mother to allow him to play the sport after she had forbidden him to do so.

Bongukuhle Langa (17) of Newcastle High School died on the field while taking part in trials, landing awkwardly on his neck attempting a tackle.

“He loved rugby. He was very good at it. I’d made him stop playing it a couple of years ago, but he always pleaded with me to allow him to play and I eventually said that he could,” Bongukuhle’s mother Puseletso Langa told Weekend Witness.

She said her son had his future planned out and knew exactly what he wanted to do.

“He wanted to be a doctor and a businessman. After finishing matric, he was planning to join the navy and spend some time there before starting his studies to be a doctor,” said the mother of two.

She described her son, who died two days short of his 18th birthday, as a “very good boy” who was always helpful around the house.

“He was like the man of the house. He was always so responsible.

“He always had a smile on his face, and was always laughing. He liked to crack jokes a lot.

“He also loved singing, and he was very friendly. He had a lot of friends.

“But, whenever he went somewhere with his friends, he always made sure that he was home before the sun went down,” his mother said.

She said the family had taken the news of his death badly.

“We’re shocked. We’ve never ex- perienced pain like this before. His grandmother … has also been badly affected as she brought him up.

“His younger brother Sazukuhle [15] also took it very badly because they were very close.”

Langa said she had just arrived home from the post office when a call came in to tell her she needed to “get to the school quickly because Bongukuhle has been hurt”.

“When I got there, I found him lying on the ground and he was surrounded by paramedics who were trying to revive him. After a while, they told me that he had died.

“I won’t be allowing Sazukuhle to play rugby. He is also now afraid of the game,” she said.

She said Newcastle High School had been very supportive following her son’s death and teachers had visited the family a number of times.

Bongukuhle Langa’s mother said her son, who died after an accident on the rugby field this week, was a laughing boy who loved to crack jokes. He was a good boy who always helped around the house, she said.
