INDENTURED labourers who came to KwaZulu-Natal from villages around Madras, India in 1860, brought with them the tradition of fire walking in honour of the goddess Draupadi.
Pietermaritzburg hosts the largest annual fire-walking ceremony in South Africa.
The event, held every Good Friday, dates back 130 years and is organised by the historic Siva Soobramoniar and Marriamen temples on Langalibalele Street.
