FIRE WALKING: BIGGEST EVENT I N SOUTH AFRICA

Weekend Witness - - Religion -

INDENTURED labourers who came to KwaZulu-Natal from villages around Madras, India in 1860, brought with them the tradition of fire walking in honour of the goddess Draupadi.

Pietermaritzburg hosts the largest annual fire-walking ceremony in South Africa.

The event, held every Good Friday, dates back 130 years and is organised by the historic Siva Soobramoniar and Marriamen temples on Langalibalele Street.

Devotees who walk the 10-metre long bed of coals prepare for 10 to 18 days before the event.
