The term kryp­ton comes from the Greek word “kryp­tos”, which means hid­den. The el­e­ment was dis­cov­ered by Sir Wil­liam Ram­say, a Scot­tish chemist, and English chemist Mor­ris M. Travers, in 1898.

OOxy­gen was the atomic weight stan­dard for the other el­e­ments un­til 1961 when it was re­placed by carbon 12. It is the third most abun­dant el­e­ment

found in the Sun and the Earth, and it plays a part in the carbon­ni­tro­gen cy­cle.
