Last effort to rescue dog trapped in the Big Hole
KIMBERLEY — A police helicopter will descend below the edge of the the Big Hole early this morning in a last attempt to rescue a dog trapped in the water for almost a week.
Singer Kurt Darren and his wife, Dunay, offered to pay for a helicopter to save the hapless animal. It was not clear if their offer would be taken up
The rescue operation was called off yesterday evening when it became too dangerous to continue trying to reach the dog, who was swimming near the wall.
During the day, the dog, apparently a Labrador, sometimes rested on ledges before jumping back into the water, swimming strongly.despite its weeklong ordeal.
De Beers regional spokesperson Abel Madonsela said the company was only made aware of the dog’s plight yesterday morning, although it turned out a visitor had mentioned to the tourism manager last Friday that he had seen a dog swimming in the hole.
Madonsela said the manager didn’t believe it until he saw for himself yesterday, whereafter police and ER24 rescuers swung into action.
The dog swims near the wall of the Kimberley’s Big Hole yesterday. It rested on ledges some of the time, having been in the hole for a week.
