ONE PERSON STILL MISSING FOLLOWING MALL COLLAPSE
ONE person is still missing following the Tongaat mall collapse.
Tongaat police spokesperson Lieutenant Mandy Govender confirmed yesterday that police knew the identity of the missing person, but would not yet release the name.
Those injured in the mall collapse on Tuesday are recovering in hospitals around the Durban area, said Nhlanhla Khumalo from the Labour Department.
“Some have been discharged and others are still recovering in hospital,” he said.
The department has now taken control of the site to do the necessary investigations. A search team is also on site daily to sift through the rubble and concrete in the hopes of finding the body of the last victim.
Govender said the police had opened a culpable homicide case. “We still have to ascertain who is responsible for the death and injuries.
“We are now concentrating on the fatality. Statements are being obtained with the intention of finding who was responsible,” said Govender.
